Our Roots

Back in 2000, at the age of 14, I announced that my family had started eating organic. My friends recoiled as if I had told them we’d started living at a leper colony.

“Does organic food taste normal? Do you eat, like, twigs?”

Nope. No twigs. But an affinity for all things natural sprouted from our switch to organic meats and dairy. Next up came all-natural soaps. Then non-toxic cleaning supplies. We began buying pesticide-free produce, exploring products made from sustainably grown bamboo, even dumping organic kitty litter into our cat’s box. This, on top of our already-fixed habits of recycling, reusing old computer paper and composting our food waste.

From the outside, we probably looked like eco-freaks – minus the vegan sandals and “Save the Whales” bumper stickers. But in our family, we didn’t place emphasis on the abnormality of our lifestyle. We just felt a shared responsibility to make good use of the planet we’d been blessed with.

As I made my way through school, the organic stigma that stung me at 14 morphed into a hip, ahead-of-the-curve label by the time I was 18. Now fresh out of college, I feel an ideological compulsion to carry on an Earth-friendly lifestyle. I consider it one of humankind’s highest callings and one of our greatest gifts:

“The heavens belong to the Lord

     but the earth he has given to man.”

Psalm 115:16

That’s why I’ve started Green Eden. I want to continue learning how I can care for the world I live in. I want to share what I’ve learned and the products I’ve discovered. And I want to bring this all to you through a website that I hope will be equal parts green e-zine and eco boutique, and 100% helpful in your pursuit of an earth-friendly lifestyle.
